Find Buddhist Attractions In San Diego County: Deer Park Buddhist Monastery

Visit Deer Park Buddhist Monastery

In the hills of northeast Escondido is the beautiful 400 acre sanctuary of Deer Park. Established as a Community of Mindful Living by Thich Nhat Hanh in July 2000, the monastery is open to retreatants (including families) for low-cost over-night stays. Visitors of all (or of none) religious persuasions are welcome to learn and practice meditation to cultivate inner clarity amidst a peaceful, natural environment. Thursdays and Sundays are also "Days of Mindfulness" open to the public starting at 8:30 am with a Walking Meditation, following by live or video-taped talks (in English and Vietnamese) by Thich Nhat Hanh or other Zen Buddhist teachers, a silent vegetarian lunch, and afternoon meditation and group dharma talks. Participation in these Mindfulness Days are free, although donations are accepted. Deer Park is one of two American retreats established by Thich Nhat Hanh, well-known Teacher of world peace and harmony since his exile from Vietnam in 1966.
