Award Winning Escondido Schools: Orange Glen High

Orange Glen High: An Award Winning Escondido School

Orange Glen High School has been named a National Demonstration School by AVID for its success with average and at-risk students.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a nationwide program that helps put students on a college prep track that they might not otherwise take.

AVID students, who are typically from low-income families or the first in their families to attend college, receive tutoring, motivation and coaching to prepare them for college entry and success.

Orange Glen Principal Diego Ochoa said the Escondido campus embraces the college-going culture needed to motivate and encourage all students to do their best. "There is a 'never say die' attitude (among the staff). . . . It's inspirational to work with teachers who believe so strongly in their students," Ochoa said.

Ochoa said nearly 300 students improved their grades from D's and F's to C's or better after Orange Glen instituted evening on-campus study sessions for students the week before finals last month. "We're so excited about the growth we've seen," he said.

While the sessions were open to all students, Ochoa credited an AVID teacher with the idea. "I borrowed the idea from Kathy Dooley, who holds Saturday study sessions for her AVID students," he said.

About 50 schools in California have been named demonstration schools, including El Cajon Valley, El Capitan, Monte Vista, Mar Vista and Southwest high schools and Southwest Middle School in San Diego County.

The AVID program, which is based in San Diego, expects to name about 100 high school and middle school campuses nationwide as demonstration schools. The criteria include having a college-going culture throughout the campus and using AVID strategies schoolwide, not just in AVID classes.
